FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE---Detroit, Michigan – November 6, 2017 SCRAP Detroit Welding Festival and Art Auction Sunday, December 10, 2017 Art lovers and bicyclists are looking forward to December 10 when their passions intersect at Detroit’s newest sport venue – the Lexus Velodrome, located at I-75 and Mack Avenue in Midtown. SCRAP Detroit – Welding Festival and Art Auction will be held from 1 – 4 pm, Sunday December 10. It features 13 kinetic sculptures, created by artists inspired by a bicycle theme. Auctioneers for the onsite sale are Detroit Metro Auctions assisted by WDET's Ann Delisi. An online auction will also take place, hosted by Jesse Long of Detroit Metro Auctions. The event is organized by SPARC. (Society for the Preservation of Art and Recreation in the Community.) “We gave each artist 250 pounds of scrap metal, bicycle parts and the challenge to create kinetic sculptures based on a theme,” said Mike Willenborg of SPARC. The pieces, each with moving parts in fascinating configurations, debuted this past August at SCRAP Fest 2017 in Midtown Detroit. They then moved to downtown Detroit for an installation in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue on Woodward at Jefferson. Then onto Ohio for a gallery show. “The pieces have been on quite a journey,” said Willenborg. Their return to Detroit purposely coincides with the Lexus Velodrome Preview Event on December 9. The 64,000 SF structure features a 1/10th mile bicycling track, 1/8th mile walking/running/skating lanes and open space for fitness classes and special events. The visible steel undercarriage of the track provides the ideal backdrop to the massive sculptures, created from scrap steel and bike parts, said Willenborg. The pieces will be in place for viewing during the Preview Event. Proceeds from the auction online and during the Sunday event will benefit not only the artists but three specific charities, including: • DETROIT FITNESS FOUNDATION: Owner and Operator of the Lexus Velodrome, DFF will be offering FREE fitness programming for Detroit youth and senior citizens. Programs begin in January 2017. • WRENCH DETROIT: Provides bikes to economically-challenged youth in Detroit and teaches them to build and fix bicycles. Since launching in 2015, WRENCH has given out 100s of bicycles. • MINT ARTIST GUILD: Employs, educates and engages young Detroit area artists with career, business and community building skills, including involvement with local art festivals. SCRAP Detroit Welding Festival and Art Auction runs from 1-4 pm, Sunday, December 10 at the Lexus Velodrome at 601 Mack Avenue, at I-75 Service Drive. The event is free, open to the public and family friendly. For details visit: For additional information, contact: Mike Willenborg, 586-623-7654, Danielle Doxie Kaltz, 313-608-4580,
