Let's be honest—summer can get expensive.
Between vacations, concerts, eating out, and trying to keep the family entertained, it doesn't take long for a fun weekend to become a costly one. The good news is that some of the best summer activities around New Baltimore won't cost you a dime.
Whether you're looking for a family outing, a budget-friendly date night, or just an excuse to get out of the house, here are ten great ways to enjoy summer in and around Macomb County without opening your wallet.
1. Watch the Sunset at the New Baltimore Waterfront

Sometimes the simplest things are the best.
The New Baltimore waterfront offers some of the most beautiful sunset views in Metro Detroit. Grab a lawn chair, take a walk along the boardwalk, or relax near the beach and watch the sun set over Anchor Bay.
People travel hours to experience waterfront views like this, and we get to enjoy them right here at home.
2. Spend the Day at Dodge Park
If you've never explored Dodge Park in Sterling Heights, add it to your summer bucket list!
This isn't just a neighborhood park. Dodge Park offers walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, a splash pad, open green space, volleyball and access to the Clinton River. It's one of the best, if not the best, free family destinations in Macomb County.
What makes it even better is Dodge Park Thursdays, which run throughout the summer and feature:

Farmers Markets
Food trucks
Live entertainment
Family activities
Community events
Free outdoor concerts
You can easily spend an entire afternoon and evening here without spending a dime.
3. Ride or Walk the Bridge to Bay Trail
Whether you enjoy biking, jogging, rollerblading, or simply taking a walk, the Bridge to Bay Trail is a great way to enjoy Michigan's summer weather.
The trail connects several waterfront communities and offers scenic views, plenty of fresh air, and a chance to explore areas you might normally drive right past.
4. Visit Your Local Library
When most people think of libraries, they think of books.
Today's libraries offer so much more.
Many local libraries host free summer programs including:

Children's story times
Craft classes
Movie nights
Book clubs
Guest speakers
Technology workshops
Teen activities
Libraries have become community gathering places and are one of the most underappreciated free resources available.
And let's be honest—on those really hot days, the air conditioning isn't bad either.

5. Enjoy a Beach Day in New Baltimore
You don't need to travel Up North to enjoy a beach day.
Pack some snacks, bring a towel, and spend the afternoon enjoying New Baltimore's public beach and waterfront area.
Whether you're swimming, reading a book, watching boats, or simply relaxing by the water, it's a great way to spend a summer afternoon without spending money.
6. Explore Local Nature Trails
Macomb County has more natural beauty than many people realize.
Take some time this summer to explore local trails, nature preserves, and parks. It's a great opportunity to unplug from technology, get some exercise, and appreciate the outdoors. You might even discover a new favorite spot that's been hiding in plain sight all along.
Some of my favorites are Metro Beach Nature Center, Stoney Creek and Sterling Heights Nature Center.
Enjoy Free Summer Concerts In Macomb County
One of my favorite things about summer is that you can find live music almost every week without buying a ticket.
Dodge Park Thursdays – Sterling Heights
Every Thursday throughout the summer, Dodge Park comes alive with a farmers market, food trucks, family activities, and free concerts at the amphitheater. Bring a lawn chair and make an evening of it.
Downtown Mount Clemens Friday Night Concerts
Downtown Mount Clemens hosts a popular summer concert series featuring live music in a beautiful downtown setting. It's a great excuse to explore local restaurants, grab an ice cream, and enjoy a summer evening.
Clinton Township Music & Movies in the Park
At Clinton Township Civic Center, families can enjoy free summer concerts, children's activities, and outdoor movie nights. It's one of those local events that many residents don't realize is available right in their own backyard.

8. Create a Local Photography Challenge
This one is surprisingly fun.
Challenge yourself or your family to find:
The best sunset
The coolest boat
The most interesting building
The prettiest flower garden
The most unique local business
You'll start noticing details about your community that you've driven past hundreds of times without ever seeing.
9. Take Your Dog Somewhere New
If you're a dog owner, you know that dogs love new adventures.

A different trail, a new park, or a walk along the waterfront can completely change your dog's day.
The best part? They'll appreciate it more than most people would.
10. Browse a Farmers Market
You don't have to spend money to enjoy a farmers market.
Walk around, listen to live music, meet local vendors, sample products, and enjoy the atmosphere. It's a great way to spend a morning while supporting local businesses and farmers.

And if you happen to leave with fresh produce, homemade salsa, local honey, or baked goods, well... that part is entirely up to you.
Make sure to take a peek at last week's blog about the best markets in the area!
Experiences Don't Have to Be Expensive and Memories Don't Have to Cost Money
One thing I've learned over the years is that some of the best memories don't come from expensive vacations. Sometimes they're made watching a sunset over Anchor Bay. Sometimes they're made listening to a free concert in the park.
Sometimes they're made taking a walk, exploring a new trail, or spending time with family and friends.

If you're looking for ways to enjoy summer without spending a fortune, start with this list. You might be surprised by how much there is to do right here in our own backyard.
Let me know what you do for free fun in Macomb County!
